I was born on a Tuesday morning, the day before the start of spring. Mum gave birth to me at home. And this is also where I spent my childhood - in a little village house with a large courtyard, farm buildings and a garden. The house stood right in the middle of the village, on the village green. In front of it was an old, disused cemetery and, beyond this, flowed a stream - the ideal environment for children's adventures. To the right of the house was the village school, to the left the church. This was the scene of the remaining part of my childhood.
My parents were ardent Catholics and our village, despite all the rapid political changes, still managed to retain its vital rhythm and colour. The local priest was the greatest authority for my parents, and for me as well. I had a happy childhood, all the more so since the priest, Father Matej Murgaš, was a passionate amateur film enthusiast. And so, in that forgotten corner of Slovakia, it was he who awakened in me my fascination for what would later become my true purpose in life - film.
After my sister's funeral, with a prayer-book which was indicative of my later love of books…

Photo for my first I.D. card. My new winter jacket wasn't considered dignified enough for the purpose - I had to have the photo taken again, this time with a borrowed smart jacket...
